Laser Marking Near Salfords on Stainless Steel Fasteners – Custom Divers
In this case study we visit our nearby customer Custom Divers. We currently do laser marking, laser etching and laser engraving on a variety of their parts which we will cover in other case studies. However in this case study we will focus on the laser marking of a Stainless Steel knurled M8 Fastener.
Laser marking stainless steel, in this case, is done on our inhouse 20 watt SPI Fiber system with a f-160 F-theta lens, the marking process of this particular component takes approximately 82 seconds. As can be seen from the video, the product is laser marked with four separate passes in order to establish the required contrast of black on stainless steel.
The four passes are at different ‘hatch’ or ‘infill’ angles as well as different laser powers, this is used in order to build up the contrast of the mark. The darker the mark becomes the less laser energy is lost in reflection from the surface. The different hatch angles are used to ensure that little area with the borders of the mark are left unmarked, it also is used to ensure that the marking has sufficient contrast from multiple different directions.
The component is located in one of universal jigs that we use on lots of different customer components as a method to quickly and accurately locate parts. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.1mm. For better tolerances or more detailed parts, separate bespoke jig can be made and used by ourselves.
There are other slightly faster methods of obtaining a dark mark on stainless steel. However on this application the customer required minimal laser interaction with the product as to not cause any type of burr on the part as this part is in constant use by human hands and can not have any sharp edges.
You can use after processing to remove any burr if required, but the time difference between the laser marking and either laser etching or engraving is minimal and the cost is better saved here than adding an expensive post processes.
