In this case study we visit our customer OneLife iD. For this customer we do laser marking of medical ID braclets. In this case the laser marking of Aluminium is done in a variety of colours, the information that is laser marked onto these products can vary from Highly Important medical information about the wearer, like severe allergies to medicine etc. Contact information in case of emergencies and a 2D QR code link to the Onelife website and login to the specific customer information. The laser marking of anodised aluminium is an industry standard. The laser marking removes the colour of the anodising and leaves the colour of the natural material. So the result is a good quality contrast between the laser marking and the surrounding material.
In the below example the material is stainless steel. In this instance if we were to laser marking stainless steel, it would produce a shiny black. Which is good contrast but only in certain angles of light. So for this customer we use a product called Thermark, or Cermark. Both are a spray on compound which when lasers bonds to the material and produces a high contrast black mark.
Laser marking aluminium, in this case, is done on both our inhouse flash lamp Nd:YAG laser system with a f-180 F-theta lens, and our inhouse 70watt fibre system. the marking process was normally about a 30 to 40 seconds depending on the material.
Due to this application being so varied in terms of the marking content the customer sends to us an excel CSV file of all the data required in specific fields. We have written a bespoke computer program, which imports the file and separates the information out into categories of product and information within that specific product. The operator is then able to run the batch in component order. The laser marking software then informs the operator as to when to change product. This results in significantly faster production capability and more importantly for our customer, it removes the operator from entering in information to the system which maybe incorrect.
With this particular requirement, accuracy was a key part of the process, due to the curvature of the product and the use of the fiber laser. The product had to marked in two halves, meaning that the laser marking need to align to itself and guarantee the spacing required. For this a special jigg was created to allow for the dual positions to be quickly located and therefore improving the throughput. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.05mm.
