Laser Annealing Services Near Clacton-on-Sea on Automotive Silencer Exhaust – MHP Exhausts
In this case study we visit our customer MHP Exhausts. For this customer we do laser annealing and laser marking of their exhaust silencers. The main material that these are made out of is titanium, as this provides the best performance for the exhausts through weight saving and temperature characteristics. The laser marking is used to change the colour of the titanium to produce a mark that provides product branding as well as company branding on the product for our customer.
The process involved in this laser annealing video is the material is heated by the laser to a temperture which makes the surface change colour, in this case to blue. You need very tight control over the laser setting to do this, and the material needs to be as uniform as possible in it’s grain structure to enable a consistent colour change across the part.
For the Laser annealing, we found the best quality and control by using our inhouse fiber laser system with a f-180 F-theta lens. In this example, the images being laser annealed is quite large, a low power is used to initialise the colour change whilst the second pass is performed to get the colour change to be uniform across the entire surface.
For these components being lasered, a standard jigg is not used as the parts vary in size and shape, Therefore the we used the main table to situate the part onto with some end stops. As the customer wasn’t too conscious of the exact location of the marking.
