Laser Cutting Card and Paper: Revolutionising Custom Packaging

The widespread use of laser cutters are transforming various industries, particularly in the field of custom packaging. With its precision, versatility, and ability to produce intricate designs, laser cutting is becoming a go-to solution for card and paper products. Whether for promotional materials, greeting cards, or packaging boxes, laser cutting ensures high-quality results with minimal waste, offering significant advantages to businesses.

What is Laser Cutting?

Laser cutting is a technology that uses a focused laser beam to cut or engrave materials. This highly accurate method involves directing the laser onto the material’s surface, where it melts, burns, or vaporises the area, creating a clean and precise cut. In the case of card and paper, laser cutting allows for fine details and intricate patterns that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional cutting methods.

Unlike mechanical cutting, which can be blunt and may leave rough edges, laser cutting provides smooth, precise cuts with minimal force. This makes it an ideal choice for delicate materials like card and paper, which require finesse to preserve their quality and integrity.

Real Life Application: Laser Cutting Card and Paper – University Degree Student

In this application, we were demonstrating the ability of a CO2 laser, to provide laser cutting of card and paper. The series of patterns, are then overlaid to produce a 3D image as part of a packaging design. The card reacts to laser cutting very well, normally best to run the process as multiple passes in order to ensure the materials does not burn along the edges. From the image you can pick out some edge burning. CO2 lasers can be processed at very high speed so even when multi pass laser cuts are used, the overall time is still commercially viable.

Laser cutting card and paper

Laser cutting card and paper is economical, fast and efficient. By using lasers to cut the material, there’s no physical contact between a cutter and product, which minimises the risk of any damage. There are no chemicals used, and the process is environmentally friendly. Additionally, the materials are simply placed on a surface and do not need to be clamped, again minimising the risk of any unintended damage.
