Laser Marking Near Putney on ABS Plastic – The Entryphone Company

In this case study we visit our customer Entryphone. We currently do laser marking on their range of ABS plastic button. Due to the range being mainly on door entry panels, the information that is laser marked is mainly numbers and symbols and a small amount of product branding.

Laser marking ABS is processed on our inhouse 70 watt SPI Fiber system with a f-180 F-theta lens, the marking process of this particular component takes approximately 2 seconds. As can be seen from the video, the product is laser marked with just one ‘hatch’ pass. In this case the outline is not marked as the key logo has some small details, which would be lost if the laser was to mark the outline.

For these parts a bespoke jigg was made to align the key in a certain orientation to the laser in preparation for the laser marking.

In this particular application as can be seen from the video, only 1 part is marked at a time. There are lots of reasons why it is best to mark items singular aswell as in a large array. The ideal scenario for costing purposes is to try and have the laser running constantly, as this is the time that productivity is at it’s highest. The mark time on these ABS parts is so short, that to load a jigg of 20 – 30 parts would take longer than the mark time of said 20 – 30 parts. Thus having cumulatively less time for the laser to be firing over the size of the job.
