Laser Marking Near Redhill on Anodised Aluminium – Risbridger
In this case study we visit our nearby customer Risbridger. We currently do laser marking, laser etching and laser engraving on a variety of their parts which we will cover in other case studies. In this case study however we will be focusing on the laser marking of a Blue Anodised Aluminium High Flow Check Valve.
Laser marking anodised aluminium is done on our inhouse flash lamp Nd:YAG laser system with a f-180 F-theta lens, the marking process of this particular component takes approximately 21 seconds. As can be seen from the video, the product is laser marked in two separate passes. The first is a heavier pass in order to remove the anodising from the material base material and then a much lighter pass in order to clean up the look and feel of the mark itself.


The fact that this component is curved does not required a use of a rotary jigg as the curvature has little impact on the quality of the laser marking, as the focal range of the older style flash lamp systems is approximately +or- 3 – 4mm, so the main focal point is set to be half-way between the top level of the marking and the bottom.
The component is located in one of our ‘V’ jigs that we use on lots of different customer components as a method to quickly and accurately locate circular parts. The jigg is designed so that it doesn’t matter on any one specific radius of part, as the ‘V’ section centralises the component in the same position every time, and then the component is pushed to the back stop. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.1mm in the X and Y position, radially is better than 0.2mm, depending on any externals features to align too. For better tolerances or more detailed parts, separate bespoke jig can be made and used by ourselves.
