Laser Marking Near Ripley on ABS Plastic Plugs – Lolapalooza

In this case study we visit our nearby customer Lola’s Leads. Due to Lola’s leads having mostly ABS plastics plugs of varying colours it means that for this particular customer we do mostly laser marking. In this case study we will be focusing on the laser marking of a Black ABS Plug.

Laser marking ABS Plastics is done on our inhouse 70watt fibre laser system with a f-180 F-theta lens, the marking process of this particular component takes approximately 20 seconds. As can be seen from the video, the product is laser marked in a single hatch pass followed the outline pass. The hatch pass is to create the colour change for the majority of the artwork on the product, the outline pass is used to sharpen up the edges of any given image to be more of single outline rather than made up of ends of the hatch lines.

The component is located in one of universal jigs that we use on lots of different customer components as a method to quickly and accurately locate parts. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.1mm. For better tolerances or more detailed parts, separate bespoke jig can be made and used by ourselves.
