In this case study we visit our customer Blatchfords. For this customer we did laser marking of medical devices. In this case the laser marking of black anodised aluminium prosthetics limbs with both product branding and visible calibration points was the main focus of our collaboration. The laser marking of anodised aluminium is an industry standard and in this particular case study you can see repeatability of the laser marking.
Laser marking of black anodised aluminium, in this case, was done on our inhouse flash lamp Nd:YAG laser system with a f-180 F-theta lens, the marking process was normally about a minute to process, but this could be vastly improved on the newer Fiber lasers, with just as much contrast as on the older Nd:YAG system. The product is laser marked in one pass with an outline added afterwards to ensure that the writing is crisp and sharp.
Depending on the specific components that were being laser marked, a variety of different jiggs were used. In the above 2 examples, the first used a rotary jigg to align the laser mark to specific points on the product, the second is located in a simple corner jigg which allows easy positioning and enabling faster throughput of the parts and therefore lower cost for the customer. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.1mm. For better tolerances or more detailed parts, separate bespoke jig can be made and used by ourselves.
