In this case study we visit our customer Goldgenie . For this customer we did laser marking of a variety smart phones, roses, watches, and all manner of gold plated items. In this case the majority of the laser marking was onto the ever increasing versions of the Apple Iphone. Our role was to provide deep product branding, a certain level of customisation and limited edition designs for our customer as a unique selling point to their customer, to supply a level of additional uniqueness to their customer.

Due to the material being used in the Iphone and smart phones in todays market being either Steel or Aluminium based on the newer versions. The only really choice was one of our inhouse Yag and Fibre lasers. The main issue with laser marking gold, is that the material is highly reflective and conducts heat really well. This causes issues with the laser marking, so ideally it would be laser marked before the gold plating is applied. Laser marking the products before they are plated makes for a more consistent and better defined visual mark.

For these components being laser marked, a standard corner jigg was used to locate and hold the components in place and in the correct orientation. These marks are repeatable to a greater accuracy than 0.1mm.
